As the names of the songs suggest, you will fight against another different character from this series on each song, and you can do it one after another in the story mode, or pick the ones you want to play one time only in the free play mode.
To win the rhythm battles, reach the end of the songs, doing so by hitting notes according to the charts until then. To do it, when the floating arrow symbols float and match above the character on the right (BF) you need to press the identical arrow keys.
