After making your choice between the story mode and free play mode, to win you need to do the same thing, which is to press the arrow keys at the same time as the identical arrow symbols match above the character to the right, and if you can do it until the song ends, you win.

If you press wrong keys, not press them at all, or press the correct ones too early or too late, you will miss notes, and if you have missed too many notes in a row, your health bar depletes and you lose. Good luck, enjoy!
