You start off as Spongebob, and then unlock other characters if you get enough points. You also get the following stages:

Move your character with the right and left arrow keys, holding a board on top of your head. With it, hit into the balls that come from above, sending them back. Don't let even one of them escape you, or you lose.

Catch the balls and send them back flying to earn points in return. For each new wave, the balls get faster, you get more of them thrown, and they can have different abilities to try and trick you. For example, there are curve balls that hit you at an angle.
