Whether you're playing in the story mode or free play mode, to win you need to reach the end of the songs, and to do that you need to hit your notes according to the charts until that point. So, when you see arrow symbols match above BF, that is when you press the identical arrow keys.

Be careful not to miss hitting said notes too many times in a row, or you lose and have to start again from scratch. Good luck, the best we wish you all!
